Design Trends for 2023
Every time the calendar rolls over to a new year I get excited to see which new design trends will emerge. While I’m not one for redoing everything to stay on top of every trend, I do love finding ways to incorporate what’s current into my designs. So, let’s take a look at what’s “in” for 2023.
Bold Colours
Pantone and Benjamin Moore have selected bold reds as their 2023 Colour of the Year. Both companies have selected these reds as they embody a sense of optimism and excitement about what is to come. Pantone’s colour is Viva Magenta and Benjamin Moore’s colour is Raspberry Blush. For the brave these colours will pack a huge punch on an accent wall or in a small space like a powder room. Those wishing to incorporate this bold look in a more restrained way can try throw cushions, area rugs and other fabrics or artwork.
Midcentury Design and Vintage Decor
As more seniors downsize there will continue to be a plentiful stock of authentic furniture and decor from the 1950’s to 1970’s. There are great shops here in Calgary that are constantly getting fantastic finds as well as many more available online. A few of my favourites are Murphy’s Mid Century, Reclaim Vintage and Kollektion. Sourcing local vintage furniture is also a good choice from a sustainability perspective, and it saves on shipping time and costs.
Mixing Wood Tones
Wood elements are a wonderful way to add a natural feel to any room. Don’t be afraid to mix woods as it’s very hard to match exactly and when it does it can look too matchy matchy. In the same warm tone, this room has rosewood, oak, walnut and fir. A variety of woods creates visual layers and makes the space feel more like the pieces have been collected over time.
Which of these trends stand out to you? Any that you’re excited to try? I’d love to chat with you more about these trends and any other design thoughts you might have so please feel free to get in touch. I hope your 2023 is beautiful!
